Over the past year or so, I‘ve become an obsessive listener of the Joe Rogan Podcast and it inspires the shit out of me. When I first started listening, Joe and his assistant, friend, sidekick (not sure what to call him) Brian Redban stuck to a pretty straightforward formula. Get stoned and record the conversation.
But why he inspires me is he insists on accepting possibility. He will rant for 5 minutes on something and then finish with “or maybe I’m full of shit”. It doesn’t matter how sure he may be about a topic, he leaves the door open to be wrong. This makes him an amazing interviewer and host since he tries to understand everything while allowing room for ‘maybe’.
Maybe our human civilization is just a zoo for aliens? Maybe we are just reliving a cycle that previous cultures have already experienced? Maybe we evolved as humans because apes ate psychedelic mushrooms? Maybe.
Sure, sometimes it’s just a bunch of stoner talk, but for the most part it’s fascinating.
It is easy to get stuck in a mode of thinking that doesn’t leave room for alternate possibilities. But are we more inspired when we accept there is a 50% chance we’re wrong or when we believe we are absolutely right?
I see inspiration being driven by the word “maybe”. Maybe let’s you accept alternatives, let’s you shift your perspective. When you finish a declarative statement add the words “or maybe” and see where it takes you.
Powerful, Joe Rogan.
